If you come from a family that has chosen careers in the medical field, you may feel compelled to follow in your family’s footsteps by choosing acareer in medicine. The good news is that there are many medical programs from which to choose. Just because your father was a doctor and your mother a nurse, both in a hospital, doesn’t mean you can’t look in to alternatives, such as travel nurse programs.
Talk to Your Family
The best way to gather information about following a career path in medicine is to talk to those who work in the medical field. Since you have family members that work in medicine, talk to them about working in the industry. Find out what they like about it and what they dislike about it. You should also consider talking with people outside of your family that work in the medical field to obtain some unbiased information.
Conduct Your Own Research
Search online and read books on different careers in the medical field. You may find career paths that you are not aware of for which you are better suited than the path chosen by a relative. For example, while your mom may have spent her career working in a hospital as a nurse, you may find it more your style to be a traveling nurse.
Consider the Pros and Cons
After you have spoken to everyone you want to speak with and conducted your research, make a list of the medical careers you are considering. Then under each position, list the pros and cons of each. Review this list as a way to help you choose the medical career path that is the best one for you.
